And so we continue our trek through the Book of John. I pray that He blinds us to our ignorance and His words shine through and touch our hearts.
Jhn 2:18 Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?
Jhn 2:19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
Jhn 2:20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
Jhn 2:21 But he spake of the temple of his body.
Jhn 2:22 When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.
- What kind of sign were they looking for?
- Did the disciples believe at first His promise of His resurrection?
After reading the previous verses and going into these, there are 2 things that stand out. First in asking for a sign they are questioning God’s authority. Much like many who would question how God could condemn someone to eternal damnation if He only has the power of mercy. "Nay but O man who art thou that repliest against God, hath not the potter power of the clay (Rom 9:20-21). Second is when the disciples believed these words that Christ said. How solemn it is that the faith that sanctifies us comes only after Christ finished work. "Moreover whom He did predestinate them He also called and whom He called them He also justified and whom He justified them He glorified" (Rom 8:30).
