"Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me." (John 5:39)

Acceptance of His will

And so we begin chapter 2. I hope you all are enjoying this, I know I am. It causes me to look a little deeper into scriptures and put what I believe to paper. I pray that God will strip away my foolishness and press in our hearts the truth and that you yourself will look a little deeper into His Word.

Jhn 2:1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
Jhn 2:2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.
Jhn 2:3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
Jhn 2:4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
Jhn 2:5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

Why is the mother of Jesus so prominent in these verses?
What significance is in Christ rebuke of His mother?
What is the meaning in "mine hour is not yet come"?

A.W. Pink separates this into 3 viewpoints. Not to re-invent the wheel let me summarize what he had to say.
1. The typical significance.
The wine had given out. Wine in the scripture is the symbol of joy (Psa 104:15). Their joy had given out. They were at the end at what they could accomplish for themselves. Their wine vessels were empty and they had no means of themselves to fill them with one drop. Like religions based on works, in time they give out and leave one comfortless, deprived, and empty.
2. The prophetical application. (relating to a prophecy)
And the third day. On the third day the earth was created from a watery grave. On the third day he will, after His hour came, arise from the dead. And when He returns to His place and after 2 days on the third day He will raise us up and we shall live in His sight (Hos 6:2).
3. The practical teaching.
Mans attempt to manipulate God’s will. Verse 3
God’s sovereignty and His will. Verse 4
Believer’s reverence and acceptance of His will. Verse 5 (and what a solemn lesson for us all)
