(Whatsoever I speak). Oh if only I could speak these words and all my words be of Him. I pray that I do not speak of me or men and press the lifeless law upon any but by the grace of God He gives me the words of His Father and the gospel of grace and mercy unto life everlasting.
Extra Credit: If this gospel is a gift from the Father and is Devine and holy who them can comprehend enough to rest in Him. Who then can be saved. That is the title of todays bonus devotion by Henry Mahan
Jhn 12:49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
Jhn 12:50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
- What is the commandment the Father gave Him?
When Christ speaks, He speaks not as a man separate from the Father, but He again reaffirms their intimate and mysterious union. His purpose on the Earth was to do His Fathers will. And the commandment and Christ purpose was not to judge men by the law but to show mercy through the gospel of grace. This commandment was not a law, which could not give life, but was that which is prescribed to Christ by reason of his office as mediator for His people. It was that which He spoke of and came to do. It was the gospel or good news that gave hope of life by the power of God unto salvation. The commandment given to man is a burden of the law. The commandment given to Christ was the freedom from the law and the grace of God. The words He speaks and presses in our hearts is this gospel the Father sent Him to speak. This gospel was a gift from the Father to the Son. It was not of man but Devine and holy. The way to life everlasting is by revelation by God and to hear and believe His gospel. Rejection of His gospel is by our flesh and is the same as rejection of God. Therefore as the Father said to Christ, so I speak. You will do well to hear the gospel. Believe and hear.
