We continue to plow our way through the gospel of John. I hope all are doing well and I look forward to reading anything anyone has to add or just has to say as words of enlightenment. I pray that it pleases God to use these words and He wipes away our ignorance and shines His truth as a beacon of light.
Jhn 4:15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.
Jhn 4:16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
Jhn 4:17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
Jhn 4:18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
- Why did Christ ask her to go to fetch her husband?
- Why did the women say she did not have a husband?
- What attribute does vs 18 demonstrate of Christ?
We have seen the omniscience of the Savior taking this path through Samaria and placing Himself by the well at this moment. We see Him as the first cause addressing the women to show her the gifts of God. We will now see that effectual calling and next the effects. To see this, I pray that we don’t only say, but understand, that the gifts of the spirit were not a result of her calling, but of His. It is important to understand there will and must be conviction, repentance, and a coming to Christ but it is only after and a result of Him choosing you and calling you. Here this is demonstrated when Jesus gives this women two clear directions "Go" and "Come". He knew this women’s heart and knew how to convict her of her sins. Before she could come she had to understand her current state and what she needed. If she, or anyone truly wants this living water they need to be truly thirsty and they must come striped of any self righteousness and as a poor, convicted sinner, thirsting for water with nothing at all to draw with (Prov 15:33). He knew the request for her to retrieve her husband would cause her to not only admit her sins but to face herself and her condition. But instead of leaving her in her despaired state He added come. The request to come to Christ with her true character. What a glorious example of Christ grace and truth. Truth for the conscience; grace for the heart. Truth which requires us to come to the light as a self-confessed sinner; electing grace which effectually called us to return to the Savior’s side and drink of the living water (Col 2:3).
