Let us never forget the subject of our studies. I pray God focuses us on His son and His finished work. May He strip away our foolishness and press in our hearts that which is truth.
Jhn 6:34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
Jhn 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
Jhn 6:36 But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.
- How is Christ like the Bread of Life?
- What would cause the believer to hunger?
As we discussed when we began the gospel of John, one of if not the underlying purpose of this gospel is to pronounce the deity of Christ; "that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and that believing ye might have life through His name". It may be for this reason that God uses the pen of John to be the only gospel to report the great decoration of Christ of ‘I AM’ (Exd 3:14). There are 7 clear I Am’s in the Gospel of John (John 6:35,48; 8:12; 9:5; 10:7-9,11; 11:25; 14:6; 15:1,5).
Here the Lord places himself before us as the Bread of Life. I am sure there is a beautiful significance to these words and like all other symbols used in the scripture we should study and meditate on it carefully. Let us feebly look at one human analogy beyond using bread as a satisfying, nourishing, daily food. Let us examine the price through which bread passes before it becomes food. It is placed in the world, springs up as a blade and becomes an ear. It is then cut down, pummeled at the hands of man, ground into flour, and finally subjected to a fiery process of an oven. Then and only then does it become bread suitable to sustain life. Dear reader such was the experience of the Bread of Life, which was Christ. He became man and dwelled in this world. He was bruised for our inequities. He was subjected to the fiery furnace of God’s wrath as He took our place in judgment. And then and only then through this process He became an intercession and the Bread of Life to us. Let us feed upon His flesh; let us feast of the meat that endureth forever.
