We continue to plow through the gospel of John. I will offer a couple of commentaries on these verses this time. I pray God touches these words and strips away our ignorance and presses in our hearts that which is truth.
Jhn 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
Jhn 6:38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
Jhn 6:39 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
Jhn 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
- Who was given to Christ by the Father?
- What does it mean to lose none?
"These Jews had seen Christ, heard Him, and witnessed the great miracles He performed; yet they did not believe! But their unbelief and the unbelief of men today shall not defeat the will and purpose of God in Christ. For according to scripture it is certain that the Father has chosen a people in Christ, given them to Him for their care, and secured their salvation through the substitution and redeemer (John 17:1-2; Eph 1:3-5; II Thes 2:13). It is absolutely certain that the Father has ordained the means by which His children are to be quickened, called, and to believe on Christ (I Cor 1:21, James 1:18, I Pet 1:2,23). It is absolutely certain that those chosen, called, and justified will come to Christ and will never perish (John 10:24-29; Rom 8:29-30)." Henry T Mahan (Bible Class Commentary the Gospel of John)
Eternal election and eternal predestination guarantee eternal preservation. Although belief in these words may not be a necessity for redemption, I see without them there can be no true security. For there is nothing in myself that I can look, know, say, or do that I can proudly stand upon and point to for my salvation. Anything of the flesh is as dead as the flesh that produced it. I can only have security looking at what He says and what He has completed. Let us not ignore or reject but celebrate and praise His sovereignty. Let us glory in the Father’s choice and Son’s obedience and sacrifice (Phil 3:10-11, 20-21). Our Lord declares in the scripture that salvation is to be the sovereign will of God and that all elected by the Father, redeemed by the Son, and called by the Spirit would be raised from the grave to eternal glory and not be lost. And He should "raise it up again". There are no words that can come close to express my thanks that my last days and first days are all in His hands (Rom 9:11).
