I rarely interject the events of the world with this Word. This is going to be the closest we get to politics and but I felt fitting with a few days before our election. May God bless these words and strip away any ignorance and press in our hearts truth that we may be free.
Jhn 8:33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
Jhn 8:34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
Jhn 8:35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
Jhn 8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
- What did it mean to them to be Abraham’s seed?
- Who among us is exempt in verse 34?
Right Now men and women are dieing for others freedom. We are told that it is a God given right and yearning of man to be free. We give thanks for the blessings we have here and the liberties we cherish. Freedom is esteemed as one of the highest temporal blessings. Freedom from foreign dominion, freedom to govern by the people, free commerce and labor, free to pursue happiness, free speech and press, and civil and religious liberty to gather and worship. For these freedoms our forefathers sacrificed life and fortune to provide and maintain the land of the free. Now in our time we fight for others, for those in a region that long to be free. Yet after our liberation, after they have been freed from dictators, many of these so-called freemen are still nothing but slaves. Although we boast of freedom here many walking the streets of our cities are ignorant of the highest purist form of liberty. The liberty and blessings that only those who the Son of God has made free will know.
- A graceless heart may be temporally free but in bondage. Suffering spiritual slavery and captivity. These men have no righteousness (Isa 64:6), have no wisdom (Rom 3:11), have no strength (Rom 5:6), have no hope (Eph 2:12), and are prisoners of sin (Gal 3:10). Worse yet those enslaved by the flesh have no desire to be free (II Pet 2:14)
- A man may be in bondage of the world but by the grace of God have a heart that is free. Freed from the consequences of sin (Rom 6:23), freed from the power of sin (Rom 6:10), and freed from the guilt (Rom 8:2). Whereby we now can cry Abba, Father (Rom 8:15).
Let us fervently seek these freedoms for ourselves. All others are but empty promises. The right to speak, the right to vote, the right to be free, all of them cannot temper the sting of death or fulfill the consequences of sin. Nothing can do this but the freedom that Christ bestows. (Gal 5:1) “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
